April 19, 2001 - Voters Give Rowland, Blumenthal, Dodd High Marks, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; But Rowland Has Early Lead In Connecticut Gov Race
Incumbent Republican Gov. John Rowland has a high approval rating and an early lead in Connecticut's 2002 governor's race, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

Gov. Rowland gets 49 percent of Connecticut voters to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's 38 percent. Rowland tops Sen. Christopher Dodd 49 - 37 percent.

Among Democratic primary voters, Dodd leads Blumenthal 48 - 37 percent, with 12 percent undecided.

Connecticut's top statewide leaders all enjoy 3 - 1 or better approval ratings:
  • 70 - 20 percent for Rowland;
  • 71 - 16 percent for Dodd;
  • 71 - 22 percent for Sen. Joseph Lieberman;
  • 72 - 11 percent for Blumenthal.
From April 10 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 910 Connecticut registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent. The survey includes 312 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 5.6 percent.

"Connecticut's statewide officials have unusually high approval ratings and strong favorability ratings among voters. Gov. Rowland's early lead could be driven in part by the fact that 71 percent of voters think is it `very likely' he will run for reelection in 2002," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz.

"Only 12 percent of voters think it is `very likely' Sen. Dodd will run for governor and only 20 percent think it is `very likely' Attorney General Blumenthal will try to step up," Schwartz added. "So voters like their leaders just where they are. They don't expect things to change and they don't seem to want things to change."

Rowland's favorability is 53 - 13 percent among registered voters, with 29 percent mixed and 4 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings among other Connecticut leaders are:
                   Favorable     Unfavorable     Mixed     No Opinion

Lieberman             58%            14%          21%          6%
Dodd                  51             12           23          14
Blumenthal            56              6           15          22

Other possible candidates for governor are largely unknown. For each of these candidates the percentage of voters who say they "haven't heard enough to form an opinion" exceeds 45 percent.

"If the leading Republican -- Rowland -- ends up running against the most widely touted Democratic challenger -- Blumenthal, then Connecticut would have an interesting race between two well-known, popular candidates," Schwartz said.

"Beyond Rowland, Dodd and Blumenthal, the field of candidates is made up of relative unknowns who would need all the time and money they can muster to establish an identity with voters." President Bush Approval

Connecticut voters approve 55 - 33 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Republicans approve 87 - 8 percent while Democrats disapprove 59 - 31 percent. Independent voters approve of Bush 55 - 28 percent.
