February 19, 1998 - Connecticut Voters Like Clinton, Lieberman, Dodd, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Dodd Holds 2 - 1 Lead Over Franks
Most Connecticut voters are satisfied with the way things are going in the state and reflect that satisfaction in high approval ratings for elected officials in Washington and Hartford, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today.

President Clinton gets a 68 - 29 percent approval rating, matched by Vice President Gore's 67 - 25 percent approval.

U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman has a 69 - 16 percent approval among Connecticut voters, while Sen. Christopher Dodd has a 59 - 30 approval.

This trend is similar to the 71 - 21 percent approval for Connecticut Gov. John Rowland reported Feb. 18 by the independent Quinnipiac College Poll, which also found 74 percent of Connecticut voters very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with life in the state.

If the election for U.S. Senator from Connecticut were held today, Democratic incumbent Dodd would beat former U.S. Rep. Gary Franks, his most likely Republican challenger, 59 - 27 percent.

"As we found in the Governor's race, it's very good to be an incumbent when times are good and voter satisfaction is high," said Quinnipiac College Poll Director Douglas Schwartz.

"Voters are saying, `If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

"This is an especially good omen for Sen. Dodd as he begins his reelection drive, and for Vice President Gore as he gathers support for a likely Presidential run in 2000."

The wave of good feeling washes over even Republicans and Democrats in Congress: Voters approve 56 - 36 percent of the job Republicans are doing and give the Democrats a 61 - 32 percent approval.

"Perhaps voters were just caught up in the Valentine's Day spirit when Quinnipiac College conducted this poll," Schwartz said.

By a 53 - 8 percent margin, Connecticut voters have a favorable opinion of Lieberman, with 20 percent mixed and 18 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability for other leaders is:
           Favorable Unfavorable Mixed No Opinion
Dodd 42 22 21 15
Franks 16 21 18 45

From February 10 - 16, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,303 Connecticut residents who say they are registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent. The Quinnipiac College Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
