November 10, 2004 - Bloomberg Approval Up As Election Year Begins, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Ferrer, Undecided Lead Pack Of Dem Challengers
New York City voters approve 49 - 39 percent of the job Mayor Michael Bloomberg is doing, putting him back at approval levels he was enjoying in the Spring and reversing a drop to 44 - 42 percent August 26 as the Republican Convention came to town, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

White voters approve 57 - 31 percent, as black voters disapprove 46 - 37 percent and Hispanic voters disapprove 46 - 41 percent.

These same voters disapprove 68 - 28 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Looking at possible Democratic challengers to Bloomberg's reelection, Fernando Ferrer is the only contender who tops the Mayor in a head to head matchup. In a hypothetical Democratic primary, Ferrer and "undecided" are the top vote-getters.

"In job approval, Mayor Mike is halfway home. He's even shaking that 'uncaring billionaire' label as an increasing number of voters say the Mayor cares about them," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"In the Democratic pack, Fernando Ferrer is the one to beat. Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields is the only other possible challenger who scores double digits among Democratic voters.

"Despite the presidential election outcome, New Yorkers give President Bush a big Bronx cheer, indicating Mayor Mike was right to keep his distance from his fellow Republican," Carroll added.

In an early look at the mayoral campaign, Ferrer beats the Mayor 45 - 40 percent, little changed from previous surveys. Bloomberg tops other possible challengers:
  • 40 - 36 percent over Comptroller William Thompson;
  • 42 - 38 percent over Fields;
  • 40 - 35 percent over U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner;
  • 42 - 36 percent over City Council Speaker Gifford Miller;
  • 42 - 32 percent over Council member Charles Barron.

When Democratic voters are asked to pick a mayoral candidate:
  • Ferrer gets 28 percent;
  • Undecided gets 27 percent;
  • Fields gets 14 percent;
  • Thompson gets 9 percent;
  • Miller and Weiner each get 8 percent;
  • Barron gets 3 percent.
New York City voters say 65 - 30 percent that Bloomberg has strong leadership qualities. The Mayor comes up short as voters say 45 - 49 percent that he cares about their needs and problems.

Bloomberg's scores on each of these measures are among his highest ever.

Voters approve 62 - 17 percent of the job Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is doing, down from a high of 69 - 15 percent in a November 25, 2003, Quinnipiac University poll. In this latest survey, white voters approve 66 - 11 percent, while black voters approve 60 - 22 percent and Hispanic voters 59 - 21 percent.

From November 5 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,221 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent. The survey includes 754 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and nationwide as a public service and for research.
