January 20, 2005 - New Yorkers Have Little Love For Stadium, Football, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; But If They Came, Most Would Use Mass Transit
New York City voters oppose 58 - 34 percent a proposal to build a stadium on the West Side of Manhattan for the New York Jets football team and the 2012 Olympics, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Opposition ranges from 68 - 26 percent among Bronx voters to 49 - 43 percent among Staten Island voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Voters support the stadium 53 - 41 percent, if the project generates enough revenue to pay back the money the city and state would borrow to build it. But if stadium revenue does not cover city/state borrowing costs, New York City voters oppose the project 78 - 17 percent.

By a 63 - 32 percent margin, New York City voters want to host the 2012 Olympics. But voters disagree 48 - 36 percent with Mayor Michael Bloomberg's claim that the city can't attract the Olympics without the stadium.

"New Yorkers don't want the stadium and they don't buy Mayor Bloomberg's argument that the stadium is essential if the city is to get the 2012 Olympics," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Because of Mayor Bloomberg's support for the stadium, 26 percent of voters say they are less likely to vote for his reelection. But 69 percent say the issue won't affect their vote.

Only 45 percent of all New York City adults say they are football fans. Of this group, 37 percent say they are Jets fans and 28 percent say they are Giants fans.

Among all adults, 19 percent say they are more likely to go to a Jets game if the team played in a West Side stadium, with 9 percent who say they are less likely and 70 percent who say it wouldn't make a difference.

If they did come to a Jets game in a West Side stadium, 66 percent of adults say they would come by mass transit, while 15 percent say they would come by car.

But among New York City football fans, 64 percent say tailgating is "very important' or "somewhat important" to the enjoyment of a game.

"Location? Location? Location? Most New Yorkers say they'd be no more likely to go to a Jets game if the team moved to Manhattan's West Side," Carroll said.

"Tailgating - which was never important when they played football in the city, but which became a big deal in the Meadowlands - matters a lot, football fans say."

From January 11 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,027 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu or call (203) 582-5201
