August 10, 2000 - Bush Bounces To Close Gap With Gore In New York, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Almost Half Saw Bush's Convention Speech
Texas Gov. George W. Bush gets his expected post-convention bounce and now trails Vice President Al Gore 44 - 39 percent among New York State voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

In a July 13 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, Gore held a 49 - 37 percent lead over Bush in New York.

With Pat Buchanan running as the Reform Party candidate and Ralph Nader running as the Green Party candidate, Gore gets 42 percent to Bush's 38 percent, with 1 percent for Buchanan and 6 percent for Nader.

From Aug. 4 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 644 New York State registered voters with a margin of error +/- 3.9 percent.

"Politicians and pundits talk about the convention `bounce,' the boost in the polls for the candidate in the news. The Republican love-fest in Philadelphia has propelled Gov. Bush to a close race in New York, where Vice President Gore had enjoyed double-digit leads for months," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Now, we'll see what kind of bounce Gore gets for his selection of Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman as running mate and from the Democratic Convention next week."

Bush's favorability rating also has bounced: By a 36 - 33 percent margin, voters statewide have a favorable opinion of Bush, with 22 percent mixed and 8 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. In the July 13 Quinnipiac University poll, Bush's favorability was a negative 28 - 39 percent.

Gore's favorability is 38 - 27 percent, with 26 percent mixed and 7 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. This is virtually unchanged from July 13.

GOP Vice Presidential candidate Dick Cheney's favorability is 31 - 13 percent, with 18 percent mixed and 38 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion.

Fifteen percent of New York voters say they watched "a lot" of the Republican Convention, while 28 percent say they watched "some" and 33 percent say they watched "only a little."

The Convention made 22 percent think more favorably of the Republican Party, while 16 percent say the Convention made them think less favorably and 59 say it made no difference.

Of the 48 percent of voters who watched Bush's acceptance speech, 43 percent say it made them think more favorably of him, while 13 percent think less favorably and 43 percent say it doesn't affect their opinion.

While he had a limited role at the Republican Convention, Gov. George Pataki has a 61 - 24 percent approval rating among New York voters, including a 46 - 37 percent approval among Democrats.

"New Yorkers continue to give their Republican Governor and their Democratic President high marks, with a 61 - 24 percent approval for Gov. Pataki and a 63 - 33 percent approval for President Clinton," Carroll said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
