March 29, 2006 - Spitzer Tops Suozzi 5 - 1 Among Democrats, Quinnipiac University New York State Poll Finds; Upstate Economic Outlook Is Bleak
New York State Democrats give State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer a 69 - 14 percent lead over Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi in a possible primary in the race for Governor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 72 - 8 percent Spitzer lead over Suozzi in a January 19 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Spitzer and Suozzi each have substantial leads over likely Republican contenders. Spitzer-Republican matchups show:
  • 66 - 18 percent over Randy Daniels;
  • 66 - 18 percent over William Weld;
  • 66 - 18 percent over John Faso. Suozzi-Republican matchups show:
  • 48 - 17 percent over Randy Daniels, with 29 percent undecided;
  • 47 - 20 percent over William Weld, with 27 percent undecided;
  • 47 - 19 percent over John Faso, with 27 percent undecided.
"Now that he's an official candidate, Thomas Suozzi has edged up a bit - but Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is still out of sight," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"One glimmer of hope for Suozzi: In the suburbs, where people know him, they like him. But Spitzer gets high job-approval marks all over the state.

"Against either Democrat, the Republican trio gets wiped out.

Because of his experience as attorney general, Spitzer would be an effective Governor, reforming New York State government, 68 percent of Democrats say, while 14 percent say he would not be effective because of his lack of executive experience.

Because of his role as an outsider, Suozzi would be an effective Governor, reforming state government, 35 percent of Democrats say, while 33 percent say he would not be an effective Governor because he lacks state government experience.

In a possible Republican primary for Governor, 48 percent are undecided. Faso gets 22 percent, followed by 16 percent for Weld and 8 percent for Daniels. In the January 19 poll, with upstate businessman Thomas Golisano leading the GOP pack with 34 percent, Weld had 9 percent to 8 percent for Faso.

"Maybe Weld's two-state idea doesn't work. Maybe it's not smart to fight Al D'Amato. Maybe Golisano's withdrawal sharpened the Republican debate. Whatever the explanation, Faso is pulling ahead of Weld," Carroll said.

New York State voters give Spitzer a 51 - 11 percent favorability rating, with 16 percent mixed and 22 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

For Suozzi, the 'haven't heard enough' score is 61 percent. For Weld, Faso and Daniels, it's 77 percent or higher.

-Only 37 percent of New York State voters describe the state's economy as "excellent" or "good," with 62 percent who say "not so good" or "poor." Among upstate voters, 78 percent say "not so good" or "poor."

Voters statewide split 39 - 37 percent on whether they are better off or worse off than they were a year ago. Among upstate voters, 41 percent say they are worse off and 35 percent say they are better off, with 23 percent who say they are the same.

From March 21 - 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,674 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. The survey includes 548 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percent, and 702 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
