Fraternities, sororities make tangible differences in the community

Throughout the fall semester, Quinnipiac’s fraternities and sororities have worked together to raise more than $50,000 for philanthropic causes in addition to completing more than 3,500 hours of hands-on community service.

The chapters raised money through several large events —  such as soccer, flag football and dodgeball — and concessions. The organizations raised awareness through tabling in the student center.

The annual Greek Day of Service program, which takes place in October, brought together nearly 300 fraternity and sorority members in an effort to perform acts of service throughout the Greater Hamden, North Haven and New Haven communities.

In all, $50,140.29 was raised and 3,719 hours of service hours were completed.

Philanthropy has been a major piece of fraternity and sorority life and draws in new members annually, leaders agree.

“Once I became aware of all the philanthropic activities that sorority life had to offer, I felt as if it was the perfect place for me,” said Lea Reichert, president of Alpha Chi Omega.

Each organization has its own philanthropic partners, some even having multiple. Many of these partnerships were established decades ago and have been carried on throughout the years in what have become important partnerships.

“Their passion, motivation, and creativity continually impress me as they come up with new innovative ideas to do more each semester,” said Avery Moses, director of fraternity and sorority life.
