Parents and Families Update: March 2023

A week in the life of the CXO

March 17, 2023

Theater students preform a scene from Bulgaria Revolt

There are a lot of experiences to highlight from the past couple of weeks, including attending the student theater production, “Bulgaria! Revolt!,” a stunning production that captures living through the fascist regime in the 1920s in Bulgaria; a thrilling acrobatics and tumbling home victory; and a thought-provoking discussion on arts and culture.

Article Highlights

By Tom Ellett
Chief Experience Officer

Dear parents and family members,

For this month, I wanted to provide a small glimpse into a portion of my life as the university’s CXO, after the 9 to 5 workday.

As many of you know, I am fortunate to reside in the university residence halls, something my family has done for more than three decades and at four different institutions.

At Quinnipiac, I live in the Commons with my wife, a faculty member in the School of Nursing, and our dog, Roman, a 13-year-old border collie/lab.

There are a lot of experiences to highlight from the past couple of weeks, including attending the student theater production, “Bulgaria! Revolt!,” a stunning production that captures living through the fascist regime in the 1920s in Bulgaria. The performance was amazing. I made a late Saturday morning stop at the Shake Smart on campus, run by students, for students, which is the new protein bar, that sells an average 65-80 shakes an hour!

The Muslim Student Association celebrated Eid on Friday night at the Center for Religion where students had a festival of food and fun.

I attended our weekly 1929 scholarship fund meeting, which is held on Tuesday nights, also run by students for students. These students plan events and activities that raise awareness on how students can donate to help their peers who need more funding to continue studying at Quinnipiac.

Early Thursday morning, I met up with a student to work out in the new Rec and Wellness Center. There are a group of regulars who join me around 6 in the morning on most days.

Every other Thursday night, we invite a group of students to come to our apartment and bake cookies for their peers.

This past Thursday night, it was my wife’s birthday, and I hired the student group, The Legends, our a capella group, to sing a few songs for her. You can watch their performance on YouTube

You’re not a Quinnipiac community member unless you get to an athletic event, so this week I made it to the Acrobatics and Tumbling meet where the Bobcats beat Augustana College at our home arena. They are now 2-0!

Once a month I cohost the “Talks on the Rocks,” a catered sit-down dinner with 70 students, faculty and staff to have a conversation on an important topic. This month we talked about the role the arts should play at Quinnipiac. Please encourage your student to attend a future talk; there is no cost!

Finally, on most Sunday nights I attend the CXO Advisory Board, comprised of sophomores and first-year students, who provide suggestions and ideas to enhance the overall Quinnipiac student experience.

As I hope you can see, I have so many opportunities to witness first-hand, many of the outside-the-classroom activities afforded to students at Quinnipiac. As always, I hope that I have the opportunity to engage with your student this semester.

As always, should you have any questions or need guidance on assisting your student with an issue, please feel free to contact us at QUParents@qu.edu.

Black History Month

For Black History month, the Department of Cultural and Global Engagement hosted a teach-in to focus on health and wellness within the Black community. Public Safety Updates

Public Safety has noticed an uptick in students using state-issued handicap placards registered to family members. This is just a reminder that a handicap placard is issued in the name of the disabled person and is for their exclusive use. The placard holder must be in the vehicle to park in a handicapped space. Handicap placards must be registered with One Stop with proper state documentation in the legal name of the placard applicant. Any vehicle and student found in violation of using a handicap placard is subject to being towed and fines. Handicap spaces are reserved for students, faculty, staff and guests who have a valid handicap placard.

Any car that is not registered with One Stop will be subject to tow. One Stop is available for all parking pass registration questions.

New furniture ordered for Old Village residential area

Based on a series of conversations through the Parent Advisory Board, the university has purchased new furniture for the common rooms of the 14 buildings (in 56 apartments) of original Village, which student’s term as “Old Village.” Furniture includes sofas, loveseats and end tables. The furniture will be ready for next semester. This is part of a multi-year project to furnish the common areas in the entire Village, and eventually The Hill.

First- and second-year students to receive self-care bags

Mount Carmel Hall Councils created self-care bags for first- and second-year students. Items included: Emergen-C, ChapStick, sunscreen and hydration packets, along with contact information of emergency contacts of companies should students need assistance with mental health concerns. These bags were distributed to residential students before Spring Break.

Second-year students discuss learning outcomes

The Sophomore Year Experience (S.Y.E.)  has kicked off spring semester suite visits in all the sophomore Mount Carmel Campus residential areas. Suite visits are intentional conversation held by RAs each semester which allows time to have conversations with their assigned residents. These conversations involve topics related to living on campus and learning outcomes from the SYE residential curriculum. The RAs will also be updating our residents on upcoming roommate socials hosted by Residential Life, which will be a time for first- and second-year residential students looking for roommate and or Suitemates for the upcoming 2023-24 year.

Successful series of events at On The Rocks Pub and Grill

York Hill residential life has hosted collaborative programming throughout the semester with On the Rocks Pub and Grill. Each event brought more than 80 students for for activities including trivia and arts and crafts. Other collaborations with On The Rocks include Cultural Competency Trivia hosted on March 6 and Stress Management, set for April 6.

3-Year Housing Requirement

Quinnipiac wants students to engage in the full experience of living on campus to maximize their personal and professional development. Therefore, all full-time undergraduate students enrolling in the fall or spring are required to live in Quinnipiac housing for their first 3 years (until the end of their sixth academic semester, not including summer or winter terms).*

*If your student is required to live on campus and does not participate in the housing selection process, they will be financially responsible for the housing contract (room and board charges for both fall and spring semesters).

Spring Break Closing and Opening

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Spring Break! The residence halls will reopen on Sunday, March 19 at 10 a.m.

Dining Updates

Chartwells, our campus food service provider, strives to deliver an exceptional dining experience for our entire university community. This includes a variety of flavorful culinary options made from quality ingredients that are served daily in dining halls across all three campuses. Occasionally, the quality of a meal served does not meet the high standards we hold Chartwells accountable to. That is why we have created a number of feedback loops and initiatives to help deliver the highest quality dining experience at Quinnipiac. This includes:

Contact a manager

If your student has any immediate suggestions, questions or concerns, please encourage them to speak directly to the dining hall manager on duty. This is often the best and quickest way to solve any dining-related issues.

The Quinnipiac Dining Student Advisory Council

The Quinnipiac Dining Student Advisory Council brings together Quinnipiac students, administrators and Chartwells staff who work together to elevate the on-campus dining experience through honest discussions and the creation of new ideas. All students are welcome to join the next meeting on Tuesday, February 21 at 5 p.m. on the second floor of the student center, outside the poster making area.

MBA Student Study

We have enlisted the support of a group of our MBA students to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of the Quinnipiac dining experience that will include student feedback and address topics like food quality, variety, meal plans and more.

Stay on track with meal points

Please encourage your student to regularly check their meal point balances on the Q-Card Balance page on MyQ and compare it to the Dining Meal Plan Budget Tracker which shows a suggested balance week-by-week throughout the semester.

Too many points?

Students who have more points than the budget recommends will be able to use these points in the spring term. Alternatively, they can transfer their points to another student.

Too few points?

Students who have less points than the budget recommends can negotiate a transfer of points from another student, supplement with Q-Cash or use a credit card.

Tips to stay on track

All students are offered a receipt at check out in the dining halls. Students should review their receipt to stay informed about how they are spending their points.

Learning Commons / Student Academic Support

Timely resources available through the Learning Commons

Academic Development and Outreach

Academic Development and Outreach aims to help students become partners in the process of their education.

Over the past few weeks, The Learning Commons has made outreach via email as well as visited many classes to talk about the academic support available to help students thrive in their classes. Your student has likely just completed their first tests, or turned in their first big assignments of the semester. We encourage students to take some time to reflect on what went well, what can be improved and what steps can be taken to make those improvements.

The Learning Commons has a team of professional academic specialists and academic coaches (these serving first year students) who are available to meet with your student for an academic consultation, as well as subsequent meetings. Staff will work with your student one-on-one or with a group of their peers to help develop evidence-based learning strategies and study skills. This is an ideal time of the semester to engage in this type of support.

More detailed information can be found on the Learning Commons sharepoint website

Peer Education

Peer education includes academic support for students by students.

  • Peer tutoring with about 50 tutors is open both on ground and online

  • Peer fellow sessions are up and running again with about 50 peer fellows

  • Study tables, 15 different meeting times each week for 18 course areas

  • Peer catalysts in 33 sections

For more information, students can see our resource page

Office of Student Accessibility

Following several weeks of pre-semester outreach, OSA continues to work with interested students. We very much encourage students to connect with OSA if they have any questions about accommodations. OSA can be reached at access@qu.edu.

We have added some new colleagues to our staff as well, providing more meeting opportunities and support to students. Learn more about OSA at Quinnipiac.

Parking, Shuttles and Transportation

Just before winter break, the Hamden Planning and Zoning Commission approved our South Quad building project, which will result in a new home for our School of Business, a new academic building with a 700-seat auditorium and a new residence hall.

Alongside this very exciting news that will energize Quinnipiac’s momentum as the University of the Future, we will have to be patient and flexible around some construction-related changes. These changes impact the south side of the Mount Carmel Campus and where we walk or drive as we circumvent the building site in that area.

Parking

The parking rules and regulations will continue to be enforced this semester. This means that first-year students may not bring their vehicle to campus for the spring term.

Learn more about parking, including rules and regulations

Please note the following reminders:

  • First-year students may not bring their vehicle to campus for the Spring term.

  • Sophomores must park their vehicles in the York Hill Garage.

  • Juniors, seniors and graduate students should consult the parking maps which show the parking permit types permitted to park in each lot.

  • Public Safety enforces all parking rules and regulations and will be ticketing and towing as needed.

  • Students with five or more unpaid parking violations will have a hold placed on their account and will be subject to towing until the violations are paid in full.

  • With the construction of the South Quad students who wish to park in Hilltop must enter through the service entrance (on New Road) by the Facilities building.

How would a student register a new/changed car for the spring?

Students may work with One Stop to register a new vehicle or change an existing vehicle.
